File or disk encryption is the only sure way of preventing unauthorised access to your documents. You can create a secure space on your hard disk or encrypt the entire computer. Truecrypt can do both but is no longer actively maintained with DiskCryptor and LibreCrypt gaining prominence in free and open source disk encryption. BitLocker is a Windows solution (professional + editions) with several options for full disk or folder encryption.
You can also use an encrypted file storage service like Peerioor Mega and destroy data on your computer.
